Ron Funches: A Singular Sensation.

By

Ron Funches is appearing at Rooster T. Feathers in Sunnyvale on August 21st–24th. If Ron Funches was a baseball pitcher his career would look like a perfect game at the top of the 7th inning. Making his name in the Northwest comedy scenes of Portland and Seattle and delivering a scorching set at Montreal’s New Faces cemented the good natured comics ascent. Funches inimitable personal style and slow twisting delivery doesn’t seem forced, the kids a natural.

Who did you come up with in Portland or were you a lone wolf?

(Laughter) No, I had friends I hung out with, that …

Jimmy Gunn – From the Start to “Retirement”: Part 1

By

Jimmy Gunn has been knee deep in the Bay Area comedy scene for the past few decades. Delivering his brand of nervously awkward comedy right from the start, he has worked with legends like Bill Hicks, Greg Proops, Patton Oswalt and more. In part one of our interview Jimmy came out of “retirement” to talk about his start, the golden age of Bay Area comedy, acting and how the comedy community has changed over the years… then promptly went back into “retirement”.

Phil: Thank you for coming out of retirement to do this Interview Jimmy

Jimmy: Yes, for …

Had a hard day? Think you’re life is so out of control you don’t know how you will possibly continue on? Unless you’re from Darfur, comedian Christopher Titus probably has you beat in the boo-hoo department. His personal history reads like a mash-up of Charles Dickens and Maury Povich. And yet, Titus has managed to transmute the lead of his life into comedy gold. Hot on the heels of his latest tour The Angry Pursuit of Happiness, Titus is fired-up, fed-up and finally, happy?

DNA: Hello

Ian Harris: Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!

By

Take a look at Ian Harris’ poster for his Critical & Thinking Tour—there’s an apocalyptic vision of a masticated skyline and in the foreground is a bald headed dude that looks like he might have either caused it, or somehow escaped it. That’s a pretty accurate visual description for Harris. His free-thinking brand of comedy although revered by skeptics, atheists and muckrakers is considered wholesale dangerous by the religious right. Why? Because Harris has the gall to question long held beliefs in a humorous manner. Sacrilege! SUSC talked to Harris about his formative years grinding in the clubs and …

Sheng Wang: The Hootinist, Tootinist, Shootinist Comedian!

By

Sheng Wang is a Taiwanese Texan comedian. That’s what every article and interview on the web says about him in the first sentence. You half expect to see Yosemite Sam appear onstage shooting six-shooters. Instead what you get is one of the funniest comics to come out of the Bay Area in the last decade. SUSC found Wang to be incredible honest and forthcoming about how he sees himself at this stage of his career.

Sheng Wang: What’s up?

DNA: I’ve read a lot of interviews online. . .

They’re boring, they’re boring. . .

They all start off with Taiwanese Texan. When I

Eddie Brill: Fearless Leader and Impresario.

By

Eddie Brill is one of those guys who not only has been making people laugh for almost 30 years, but is a behind-the-scenes mover and shaker. Brill booked all the comedy acts for The David Letterman Show, books the prestigious Great American Comedy Festival that is located in Johnny Carson’s hometown in Norfolk, Nebraska, and is constantly on the hunt for new comedy talent. SUSC was happy to glean a few minutes away from Brill, who travels the country following New York sport teams,  doing gigs and signing acts.

Brian Posehn: Hardcore Nerd, Metal Head, Comic.

By

We’ve seen Brian Posehn’s distinctive cranium on Friends, Seinfeld, Just Shoot Me, The Sarah Silverman Program and of course on Mr. Show. He also pops up in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Devil’s Rejects and the animated version of Clerks. Numerous voice-over work, comedy writing and live appearances with the Comedians of Comedy have solidified Posehn’s position as the nerdiest/metalist/hardcore geek in showbiz. SUSC was very happy to get a few minutes with Posehn and talk about the early years and his latest unlikely collaboration.

DNA: Hey Brian.

Brian Posehn: Hey DNA, how ya doing?

Doug Stanhope: The Angriest Comic in America. Part Uno.

By

There is no other living comic whose stream-of-consciousness tirades against all that is unjust is more revered by comedy fans and comics alike then Doug Stanhope.  His infamous 1st place win in the 1995 SF International Comedy Competition over Dane Cook is often looked to as a sign that there is hope in the world. Other competitors that year included Dwight Slade, Robert Hawkins, Arj Barker, JR Brow and Paul Nardizzi, but it was Stanhope who catapulted over all the other talent. Equal parts infamous and famous, SUSC found Stanhope accessible and ready to rant. The first phone call …

Demetri Martin: The Renaissance Comic

By

Stand-up comic Demetri Martin isn’t tied down to any particular format—music, drawings, books, film, jokes are all grist for the mill of this creative artist. From Yale Law School to the dive bars of New York City, Demetri re-imagined himself from a successful lawyer to a skateboarding stand-up comic whose doodles and one-liners would take the country (and world) with astonishing speed. His CD’s, Amazon downloads, YouTube videos and comedy specials wedged themselves into the hearts of comedy lovers of all ages with such tenacity that his ascent up the comedy ladder is legend. Despite inhabiting the upper echelon …
