Jackie Kashian: Better with a Punchline!

By

Jackie Kashian once heckled Sam Kinison, worked for Bill Kinison and was part of the fabled Alternative comedy scene alongside peers like Maria Bamford, Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Tompkins. If that isn’t enough name-dropping in the first sentence, you may not be a real comedy fan. From appearances on Conan, Comedy Central and Last Comic Standing, Kashian is an honest to goodness working comic. Her podcast The Dork Forest (http://tinyurl.com/kbzdryk) features hundreds of episodes with the elite of the comedy world.

Kashian will be appearing at Rooster T. Feathers, in Sunnyvale, CA  on April 16-19th get your tix …

Beginners Guide to the Chico Comedy Festival 2015

By

Greetings,

It’s tough to wrap ones brain around new festivals, so let’s break it down step-by-step.

On Saturday Night, April 18th at 8 venues throughout downtown Chico, 50 (30+ in the main fest, 20+ at the late nights) comedians will be performing.

This is the Crème de la crème of California’s comedy scene. And, I probably lost most of you with the “crème” word, but it means “the best”. By “best” I mean all of the comics have either

A. Been on Comedy Central, MTV or a feature film.

B. Performed overseas for the troops

C. Or, been voted Best in their city by a …

Kyle Kinane: Good at Comedy, Bad at Bullshit.

By

By just listening to his voice, you would think Kyle Kinane is a crusty old dude in his advanced years. Truth is, Kinane is far younger than that, although also, far crustier. With a punk rock ethos and a knack for hilarious takes both sober and drunk, Kinane exudes a kind of wisdom that far belies his years.

Kinane’s won @midnite 7 times, the “voice” on Comedy Central that introduces all their programing (since 2011), a favorite on a wide spectrum of podcasts including WTF, The Nerdist and the Adam Corolla Show and a veteran of comedy specials. SUSC joins …

Don McMillan: Old School Lucky Charm

By

Here at SUSC we have a thing for Bay Area comics from the late 80s and early 90s. Don McMillan was definitely a golden boy. His background was Electrical Engineering, where he was instrumental in designing early Microprocessors. He broke away from his day job when he won the 1991 SF International Comedy Competition. Next came dominating on the extremely popular Star Search, securing the $100,000 Grand Championship in 1993. Multiple television appearances, sold out shows around the country and starring in 15 national commercials for Budeweiser, McMillan has stories to tell.

SUSC: Where do you have a

Tim Lee: Comedian, Scientist and Maverick.

By

Tim Lee already had a PhD under his belt when he performed comedy at The Brainwash in San Francisco for the first time. 12 years later his YouTube videos have multi-millions of hits, Lee sells out venues around the world and is a regular at corporate gigs for companies like Microsoft. What SUSC found unique is that Lee blazed his own trail, booking his own venues and cultivating an audience that liked smart and funny at the same time. Lee is also a member of the Incredibly Handsome Comedians Tour, but don’t hold that against him, he’s actually a …

Mo Mandel: Ringleader of a Big Drunk Circus.

By

Mo  Mandel has made numerous appearances on CONAN, CHELSEA LATELY, CRAIG FERGUSON, and Comedy Central.  As an actor Mandel has appeared on such hit shows as MODERN FAMILY, CASTLE, and HAPPY ENDINGS, and stared opposite Hank Azaria in FREE AGENTS on NBC.  When Mandel is not telling jokes or hosting his new show he’s often writing sitcom pilots, which he has done for NBC, FOX, FX, FXX and THE DISNEY CHANNEL.  Basically, the dude is talented and assuming hosting BARMAGEDDON doesn’t cause him to become a full-blown alcoholic, his future is bright and getting brighter.

SUSC: Mo.  It’s DNA with

Myq Kaplan: “All the Yoda’s of Stand-Up Comedy We Are.”

By

Myq Kaplan’s distinctive voice, crafted bits and jokes debuted on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and has since gone on to appear on Late Show with David Letterman, Conan, The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and in his own half-hour Comedy Central Presents: Myq Kaplan special. A NJ born atheist/vegan, Kaplan is an enigmatic force in the American comedy scene.

Editor’s Note: When I transcribe interviews for SUSC, I often leave out any tangents that take away from the thrust of the talk. In Myq’s case, I’ve left it in. His quirky, hilarious personality …

Conor Kellicutt: Top of His Game

By

Bay Area comic and actor, Conor Kellicutt is one of those comedy guys who always seems to have been around the scene and always destroys onstage. With two teenage kids, Kellicutt is a busy man. Between appearing in an award winning Woody Allen film to taking his daughter for a piercing, Kellicutt doesn’t sleep much. SUSC is stoked he was able to find some time to converse with us about comedy, acting and growing up a child of hippie actors.

CONOR: What are we talking about?

SUSC: This is for SUSC, so it’s about you and your comedy history.

That sounds like fun. So we’re …

Cole Stratton: The Man Who Never Said No.

By

Cole Stratton is the co-founder of the SFSketchfest along with Bay Area actor/comedians David Owen and Janet Varney. Stratton also has an extremely popular podcast called Pop my Culture, an all-star travelling  group called The Theme Park Improv Show and has killed it narrating scathing commentaries on RiffTrax.com run by MST 3000’s Michael J. Nelson.  While SUSC has mostly followed the inspiration behind comics being comics, this interview takes us behind the scenes of SF Sketchfest, with the man behind the curtain talking about what it takes to put on such a massive event.

SUSC: SF Sketchfest seems mindboggling to organize.
